After receiving four recommendations from four different doctors to visit a pain management clinic to try and manage my pain, I was hesitant because I don’t want to be on medication but I started to feel like it was my only option because I have had severe chronic pain in my abdomen for over a year now. I had a colonoscopy, blood tests, every type of scan possible, stayed overnight in the hospital, and even surgery to try and fix the problem but with no success. I finally decided it was time to go to a clinic because it was starting to really effect my life and missing so much work due to pain definitely doesn’t help. My regular doctor (very respected by the community and other doctors, whom also delivered me and has known me my entire life - you’ll understand why I say this in just a moment) agreed that it was probably time and sent a referral to Zion Pain Management. Clearly he thought I needed to go. I get to the clinic and they have me fill out a huge packet with all sorts of questions and statements how they want to help me to get back and enjoy a normal pain-free life and of course they took my insurance money. I get called back to the room and Dr. Stott immediately proceeds to tell me without previously speaking to me at all, that he wasn’t going to give me a prescription for anything because he thinks I’m, quote: “a drug seeker” because nobody has been able to identify the exact source of my pain (which feels like I’m being stabbed repeatedly with a knife). So yes, he immediately jumped to that conclusion. Here I am feeling like he is the only person left to help me and he makes me feel worse than anyone else ever has. I have never felt more humiliated and accused of something so bad that I certainly am not. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not that type of person. Not that people who have an addiction problem are bad, it’s just not me. He then proceeds to tell me there is something he can prescribe me, an alternative to pain pills that is non-habit forming; a patch that gradually keeps the pain away. It sounded like a good idea to me but the only problem is I thought it was the same kind of patch that my regular doctor tried to prescribe to me but my insurance wasn’t going to cover it and it is very expensive but decided I would at least try again. Well it wasn’t the same patch. I found that out at the pharmacy when picking it up. The patch Dr. Stott gave me was something they give people who are coming off hard drugs! He was so convinced that I had a drug problem without ANY evidence to support his claim, and even after giving him a urine sample, he thought he would give me something that would make me MORE sick because the medication requires that you are going through withdrawals from heavy drugs to be of any use. If not, it makes you sick. I went back to the clinic and spoke to Dr. Stott about my concerns and asked him why he would prescribe me something like that and why he was discriminating against me thinking I was an addict with no evidence to support it. He said the patch wouldn’t make me sick because he felt like I was coming off some kind of hard drug. I asked him, If I was this “drug seeker” like he claimed, why would I wait more than four months to finally take the referral from both the hospital and my doctor? Why would I turn it down if all I was doing was looking for drugs? I wanted to see if I could get nerve blocking done or something, ANYTHING at all that could help me not live in agony on a daily basis. He even asked if I wanted him to write me a pain medication prescription and I said, “No.” This made Dr. Stott very agitated with me and he politely told me that I was not welcome at his clinic and I’d have to get help elsewhere. Well, I was in severe pain while I was at the clinic and I decided that I would at least try the patch so I could go to work and support my family. And what do you know, the patch DID make me very sick and I threw up five times that night. What an arrogant doctor to put it bluntly. I’ve never been treated so badly. I do not recommend this clinic.
